✊ Trolls hate this podcast... But I loved it

One of these 3 shows... but which?

Happy Friday friends,

I still remember my first encounter with a troll.

It was 2017 and I was just a year or two into running my podcast agency.

In addition to the agency I was blogging about podcasting, and managed a Facebook group of about 2,500 podcasters.

I also had the gall to offer a paid mastermind to a small group of podcasters.

Which to the troll, was utterly unforgivable.

The mastermind was 3 months and cost maybe $300 per person, which worked out to about $10/hr for my time investment after accounting for all the marketing and admin around it.

But to my troll, the idea of charging podcasters anything for any service was a sure sign of a scam.

And so he published multiple articles calling me out (alongside a number of legit snake oil salesmen) and posted them to podcasting communities across the internet.

Nevermind that every member who went through the mastermind had found it utterly transformative for how they were approaching their shows.

They even told him so, in response to his posts.

His reply?

"LOL"

While my community came to my defense and I didn't suffer any reputational consequences (that I know of), the experience affected me deeply.

I pulled back from promoting anything, paid or free, and it took a good year or two to build my confidence back.

It wasn't a fun experience, but in the big picture, I consider myself lucky.

I had one troll, one time, based on a specific scenario.

It's not like there was an army of trolls ceaselessly scouring the internet looking to attack, downvote, and undermine me and my content based on my gender, skin color, or sexuality.

And yet, that's the sad reality for countless creators.

Creators who not only have to deal with all the usual challenges of content creation, audience building, and business growth...

But who have to do so in the face of a constant stream of negative podcast reviews and social media comments.

For these creators, the decision to carry on in the face of the onslaught is nothing short of heroic.

If this is you, thank you for continuing to show up and contribute.

Now, while it might seem cruel to pile on, today, we're roasting one of these shows, This Queer Book Saved My Life, hosted by Scrappy Podcaster J.P Der Boghossian.

And while the trolls certainly didn't like the show, we found a lot to love.

From a highly unique and compelling show concept, to perhaps the best episode descriptions we've seen yet, J.P. is doing a lot of things right when it comes to the show.

That's not to say there's nothing to improve, however.

This is still a roast after all.

Chief among those improvements are a couple of big missed opportunities when it comes to custom episode artwork and the show description...

Not to mention a major potential roadblock to new listener acquisition that could be solved in the editing process.

👉 Watch the roast on YouTube or listen in your favourite app.

In this roast, we cover:

  • The power of a simple, straightforward, and specific show title (when paired with a compelling concept)
  • Highlighting your show's hooks to win over skeptical listeners
  • The role of strategic "Topic Selection" in growing your show
  • Writing episode descriptions that grab listeners
  • Opportunities to use visual references to attract more listeners
  • One big opportunity to improve the listener experience and grow the show
  • And more

If you're feeling brave enough to submit your own show for a roast, here's how to do it:

  1. Subscribe to Podcast Marketing Trends Explained
  2. Leave us a review that includes your show name
  3. Wait nervously on pins and needles, hoping that we don't (or do) pick you

Have a great weekend, and as always...

Stay Scrappy,

PS. If you have a validated product/service valued at $1k or more and a show with at least 500 dl/ep, you're likely a few strategies, tactics, and best practices away from adding $1k–$5k/mo in podcast-driven revenue.

Think podcasting is hard? When it comes to creative mediums it could definitely be worse...

Every so often, someone comes along who—while on the surface is playing the same game as everyone else—is clearly operating on an entirely different level. In sports, it's easy to spot these people. In fact, it's impossible to ignore them. When it comes to podcasting, however, and more specifically podcast marketing, it's almost impossible to...
